State of the Queries

Series on Google Autocomplete

Whenever you search for something using Google, it tries to finish off your query while you're typing. The suggestions that Google gives you are taken from real search queries performed earlier by other people.

We had the idea that cataloguing these queries might give us a few insights into our collective searching psyche.

For these videos we automatically created queries such as 'Does the internet aa...', 'Does the internet ab...', 'Does the internet ac...' into the search bar and collected all the suggestions we encountered.

We then replaced the words 'How not to' with 'Do not' and voila, an automatic comedy script took shape!

A big thank-you to the inimitable Sina Khani for presenting the series.

Episode 1 ➝ Things You Should Not Do

In this video we saved all Google auto complete results of the question "Is it ok to..." into a list. Then we asked Sina to answer them in a negative way.

So "Is it ok to blush?" is transformed into "Do not blush"

Episode 2 ➝ True or False

In this video we saved all Google auto complete results of the question "is it true that..." into a list. Then we asked Sina to state them as a fact.

So "Is it true that pizza is a vegetable? " is transformed into "Pizza is a vegetable."

Episode 3 ➝ The Internet

For this video we saved all Google auto complete results of the question "Does the internet" into a list. Then we asked Sina to read them out loud.
